RESPIRATOR FIT TESTING

RESPIRATOR FIT TESTING

KAIZEN SAFETY SOLUTIONS, LLC will come to your site to conduct fit testing (qualitative or quantitative) or you can schedule an appointment to come to our office the first Friday of every month for those who just need 1 or 2 fit tests.

Respirator Fit Tests

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) (29 CFR 1910.134) requires respirator users to be fit tested to confirm the fit of any respirator that forms a tight seal on your face before using it in the workplace. Fit testing is important to ensure the expected level of protection is provided by minimizing the total amount of contaminant leakage into the facepiece through the face seal.

A medical evaluation determines your ability to wear a respirator. You must complete a medical evaluation before you are fit tested and before using a respirator in a workplace.

If you are using your respirator for air purifying applications, we off medical evaluations online.  This is a medical questionnaire compliant with OSHA.  The respirator clearance is provided by a third party vendor and results are immediate.

We set your company up with a portal for free and you easily track your employees history and when they are due for their next evaluation.  The medical evaluations are required annually.   Cost is $50 per person.

Fit testing is required annually
You should be fit tested at least annually to ensure your respirator continues to fit you properly. Because each brand, model, and size of respirators will fit slightly different, you should be fit tested every time you wear a new model, manufacturer type/brand, or size. Also, if your weight changes or facial/dental alterations occur, a fit test should be done again to ensure your respirator remains effective.

QUALITATIVE FIT TESTING

Qualitative fit testing is typically used to fit test  N95 type respirators or 1/2 mask face pieces.

A qualitative fit test (QLFT) relies on the respirator wearer’s senses to determine if there is a gap in the seal of the respirator to the wearer’s face. The  OSHA-accepted fit test protocols provide complete instructions for conducting QLFTs with the accepted test agents.

QUANTITATIVE FIT TESTING

Quantitative fit testing is typically for full face respirators used as air purifiers or face pieces used by fire departments such as self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Quantitative fit testing (QNFT) is another type of mask fit testing used to determine whether a respirator properly fits an employee. This test objectively measures leakage amount (quantity) using a specific machine or software that calculates the measurements. It does not rely on human taste.
